Navigate, Focus, Zoom, and Export the Chart

Readers search the chart, switch Full tree and Focus, zoom and pan, collapse branches, and download a PNG when export is on. Authors set the starting depth, the root, and whether PNG export is available.

Search matches people in the loaded chart. Press Enter to move to the next match and Shift+Enter to move to the previous match.

Full tree and Focus

Full tree is the pannable, zoomable chart. Each node can expand or collapse. The summary line reads {N} rows · {N} root(s) · click a node to focus.

Focus shows one person at a time:

  • A clickable breadcrumb of their management chain
  • Their own card
  • Up to four peers (PEERS)
  • All of their reports (REPORTS ({N}), or No direct reports.)

Clicking anyone re-centres the view. Email and Teams chat appear only when the Email role is mapped and that person has an email address.

Containers narrower than 640 pixels always use Focus. The mode switch is hidden.

Depth, zoom, and the canvas

Initial depth (1 level, 2 levels, 3 levels, or All) sets how much of the tree is expanded when the page loads. After a reader expands or collapses a node themselves, their choice wins for that node.

Zoom runs from 30% to 200%, plus Fit. Use Ctrl or Cmd with the mouse wheel. Below about 80%, nodes compact automatically. Below 50%, they reduce to initials, so a large chart stays readable at a glance.

Expand canvas widens the working area. Esc closes it.

Drag to pan. The canvas legend includes drag to pan.

Keyboard

  • Tab moves between controls and nodes
  • Arrow keys move among nodes
  • Enter re-roots Focus on the current person
  • Space collapses or expands a node

PNG export

When PNG export is on, Full tree mode offers PNG. The control's purpose is Download the chart as a PNG image.

The export always draws every branch expanded, whatever is collapsed on screen. If Date stamp is on, the image includes a date.

The export reduces its resolution automatically to fit the browser's maximum image size. It is refused only when even a 1:1 image would be too large. That depends on the drawn size of the chart, not on a fixed number of people.

The refusal message is This chart is too large to export as an image. Set a Root person in the property pane to export one branch at a time.

Set a Root person. That is the remedy. The export then measures and paints only that person's branch, which usually fits.

A source above 5,000 people is refused before a chart is drawn. Above 3,000 people, a notice warns that expanding every branch or exporting the full chart may take a few seconds. Charts read best at up to about 500 visible nodes. See Zenpo Org Chart for those limits.
