Configure the External Marker
The External marker group marks people outside your organization. They draw with a dashed outline and an EXTERNAL tag on the focus card. The marker never changes who reports to whom, and it never hides anyone. External people stay in the tree, in search, in counts, and in the PNG export.
Org Chart never decides that a value such as Contractor means external. You do.
Field rule
Map External marker field (optional) to a Choice, text, CSV header, or Yes/No column. Typical fields are Worker Type, Employee Class, or IsFTE. There are no required column names and no required values.
The selected field must contain six or fewer distinct nonblank values. That is a field rule, not a selection cap on a large vocabulary.
If the field has more than six distinct values, the pane shows Too many values for External marker. This field contains {N} distinct values. Choose a field with 6 or fewer values, such as Worker type or Employment category. Pick a more specific field.
A Yes/No column always offers Yes and No.
Other messages, quoted exactly:
- No values found in this field
- Select at least one value to apply the external treatment.
- Selected value(s) no longer found in the source: {values}. The selection is kept in case they return.
- This field now contains {N} distinct values — more than the recommended limit of 6. Your selected values still apply; consider a field with fewer values.
Values marked external
Once the field is accepted, Values marked external lists the distinct values found in it. Select which of those values receive the external treatment. Matching is trimmed and case-insensitive. At least one value must be selected before any card is styled.
Layout recognition may suggest the field. It never preselects values.
