Connect Your Data and Map Columns

Point Org Chart at a SharePoint list or a CSV file, map roles to your columns, then choose Relationship format and how the chart looks. Roles are not fixed column names. The selected view carries order, filter, and item limit. See How Zenpo Web Parts Use Your SharePoint Data.

The property pane groups are License, Data, Content mapping, Relationships, External marker, Layout, Behavior, and Appearance (web part only).

Until a source is bound, editors see Configure Org Chart and Bind a SharePoint list — or a CSV file from a library in this site — with people and structure, and map its columns to draw the chart.

1. Add the web part​

  1. Edit a SharePoint Online modern page.
  2. Add a web part and type Zenpo.
  3. Choose Zenpo Org Chart from News, people and events.

2. Choose a data source​

Under Data:

  1. Set Heading if you want a title. The default is Organization.
  2. Set Data source type to SharePoint list or CSV file.
  3. For a list, pick Data source (list) and a View.
  4. For a CSV, pick the Document library and the CSV file. The file must be a .csv in a library on this site. First row must be headers. Comma and semicolon file delimiters are detected automatically. CSV only — not XLSX, not TXT.
  5. Set Cache duration. The default is 5 minutes (recommended).

List versus CSV rules, including the 5,000-row cap, are on CSV and SharePoint List Sources.

If you would rather start from sample people, use Need a starter list? Create one with sample data. That creates an Employees list with fictional records and binds the part. The link appears only if you can create lists. The starter uses Manager lookup — SharePoint list only. See Create Starter Lists with Sample Data.

For an HR-system file, use an HRIS CSV export workflow: export CSV, store it in this site, select it, then review the mappings. Zenpo does not connect to Workday, ADP, SAP SuccessFactors, PeopleSoft, or any other HR system.

Date format (Auto, Month / Day / Year, Day / Month / Year) appears only when Hire date is mapped and the file or list has ambiguous dates.

3. Map content roles​

Under Content mapping, map:

  • Name (required)
  • Photo (optional)
  • Job title (optional)

Open ▸ More fields for:

  • Department (optional)
  • Location (optional)
  • Email (optional)
  • Hire date (optional)

Then map Additional metadata if you want them:

  • Primary badge
  • Secondary badge
  • Supporting text

Badge slots can take Tenure band when Hire date is mapped. The pane hint is Badges suit short values (Skills, Tenure, Employee type). Supporting text suits longer ones (Ask me about, Certifications).

Unmapped optional roles render nothing. Changing the list or file resets mappings. Changing only the view keeps them.

The web part may suggest mappings from known export-style and API-style headers. Review them. See Automatic Mapping Suggestions.

4. Set Relationship format​

Under Relationships, set Relationship format to match the source, then map the fields that format needs: Person ID, Manager ID(s), Solid-line manager ID, Dotted-line manager ID(s) (optional), Manager ID, Relationship type, or Manager.

The five choices and their rules are on Choose a Relationship Format. ID matching and Multiple-manager separator are on Map Person ID and Manager ID.

5. Map the External marker (optional)​

Under External marker, map External marker field (optional) and then Values marked external. The field itself must contain six or fewer distinct nonblank values. See Configure the External Marker.

6. Set layout​

Under Layout:

  • Root person: default Auto-detect top. The dropdown lists people who have at least one report, plus Auto-detect top. Other root candidates appear as Unassigned. See Unassigned People and Unresolved Managers.
  • Initial depth: 1 level (default), 2 levels, 3 levels, or All.
  • Viewport height: Compact — 420px, Standard — 600px (default), Tall — 800px, or Fill available viewport.
  • Node density: Photo + title (default) or Compact.
  • Department tint: off by default. It requires Department to be mapped.
  • PNG export: on by default.
  • Date stamp: on by default. It appears only when PNG export is on.

Choosing a Root person charts that branch. That is also the remedy when a PNG export is refused as too large. See Navigate, Focus, Zoom, and Export the Chart.

7. Set behavior and appearance​

Under Behavior:

  • Expand animation: Cascade (default), Unfold, or Simple.
  • Expand speed: 1 — Brisk (180 ms), 2 — Standard (300 ms) (default), or 3 — Relaxed (500 ms).

Under Appearance (web part only), set Color vibe, Accent color, Corner radius (default 6), and Node spacing (8 to 24, default 14). Appearance applies to this web part only. See Appearance Settings: Color Vibe, Accent Color, and Corner Radius.
