Page Heading FAQ and Troubleshooting
Answers for the typographic heading: the three modes, where text is stored, a disappearing heading, reading-time math, and the Heading 3 visual size.
What are the three modes for?
Hero — welcome band is a display-scale opener with an optional kicker, subline, and up to two buttons. Section — band opener is a kicker and title that opens a section, with an optional see-all link. Article — standfirst is an opening paragraph with a computed reading time.
Where is the text stored? Do I need a list?
No list. The text is authored in the web part and stored on that page.
Why does my heading disappear on the published page?
Because its primary text is empty: the title for Hero and Section, the standfirst for Article. In that state the web part renders nothing at all: no empty band and no placeholder. Editors see a dashed placeholder explaining it. Switching modes never loses what you have typed.
How is the reading time calculated?
From the page's own content, at 200 words per minute, rounded up. A very short page reads 1 min read, never 0. It is available in Article mode with Show reading time on. Words inside list-driven web parts are not counted. The estimate is cached for the browser session, so an author who edits and re-reads immediately may still see the previous figure.
Does choosing Heading 3 make the section title smaller?
No. The Heading level override changes the semantic outline for accessibility and navigation only. Heading 3 renders at the same visual size as Heading 2.
